The revolutionary changes that occurred in the design and illustration of books during the Edwardian period have remained largely overlooked. This lecture offers a chance to remedy this neglect by looking at the ways in which the look and feel of books at this time changed for readers all ages and classes. The massive growth of the contemporary reading public, alongside major technological breakthroughs in colour illustration, meant that the book was comprehensively reimagined at the start of the new century. An opportunity to experience the brave new Edwardian world of the book from the perspective of the often wide-eyed reader. Jonathan Wild is Senior Lecturer in English Literature at the University of Edinburgh. His book, 'The Literature of the 1900s: The Great Edwardian Emporium' was published by Edinburgh University Press in 2017.
