About Lecture: Beyond Hornel: Scottish Photographers in Meiji Japan

Due to the Covid situation this lecture will now take place online. Registration is still required. All attendees will be sent joining instructions in advance of the event.

When Edward Hornel and George Henry travelled to Japan in 1893, they encountered a community of photographers that supported their own artistic pursuits in the country. Their visit was particularly timely, but Scottish photographers, artists, and merchants had long been involved in the growth and popularity of photography in Japan. This talk will examine the history of Scottish expatriates in nineteenth-century Japan and their contribution to the photography networks and communities in their adopted country. Luke Gartlan is Senior Lecturer in the School of Art History at the University of St Andrews. He is the author of A Career of Japan: Baron Raimund von Stillfried and Early Yokohama Photography (Brill, 2016), and also served for six years as editor of the journal History of Photography.

Free, but booking is essential; to book online or visit or phone the City Art Centre reception on 0131 529 3993.

** Please note that due to the current situation with Covid 19 we may need to run this event on a digital platform rather than in the venue; such a decision may have to be made at short notice. If a switch to an online event is required this will be communicated here and on our Twitter account @Edinculture. **
