Back by popular demand, Intro to Japanese brings new and exciting topics to anyone looking to try out the Japanese language - be it in preparation for future adventures to Japan, to try something new or simply for fun this summer!
---What to Expect---
Small groups: 3-5 students.
Classes held on either Skype or Zoom.*
A dedicated, enthusiastic tutor and friendly, supportive atmosphere.
Clear handouts and slides provided with each lesson.
Plenty of tips and insights from someone who has gone from zero to near-native fluency in Japanese.
*Depending on the relaxation of lockdown, it may be possible to arrange in-person classes in Edinburgh. Should this occur, a small contribution may be required to cover room booking costs. Any decision to arrange in-person classes would be made only with the consent of all participants.

The course is split into four parts with the following booking options:
● 3hrs - £45 (£15 per hour)
● 6hr Combo - £81 (10% off)
● 9hr Combo - £122 (10% off)

Part 1 | A Brief Intro | 3hrs
★ Welcome to Japanese - An overview of the Japanese language and your first chance to try out basic greetings, self introductions and how to write your name.
★ Self Introductions - Learn to introduce more about yourself and ask questions about others, including age, nationality and occupation.
★ Describe Your Routine - What are you doing today, tomorrow or on Friday at 3pm? Learn basic time phrases, verbs and grammatical particles ni and wo.
Part 2 | Survival Japanese | 3hrs
★ Directions Part 1: Around Town - Learn practical words and phrases to help find your way along the streets of Tokyo and beyond.
★ Shopping - Practise real-life scenarios such as asking for prices and where to find essential items. This session will also cover how to use adjectives and make requests.
★ Food Part 1 - Perhaps the most important topic if you want to travel in Japan, in this session we will cover the basics of how to make orders, use other special language for mealtimes and generally navigate eating out in Japan.
Part 3 | Survival Plus | 3hrs
★ Food Part 2 - Because we just can't get enough of Japanese cuisine, this session delves deeper, covering how to order multiple items, order drinks (caffeinated or otherwise) and use adjectives to describe food.
★ Directions Part 2: Travel Japan - Learn essential phrases and other language to help you get from A to B, including transport methods, journey length and arrival and departure times.
★ Test Drive Your Japanese - A series of real-life scenarios designed to let you test what you have learnt so far. Perfect if you are planning a trip to Japan!
Part 4 | Beyond Intro | 3hrs
★ Likes, Dislikes & Saying Why - Learn to express more about yourself and others, venturing into more advanced grammar as you learn to explain your likes and dislikes.
★ Formal and Informal Japanese - Experiment with one of the most important elements of Japanese: how to juggle honorific, humble, casual speech and more.
★ Chat Like a Local: Taking everything you have learnt so far, add some flair and have some fun with natural phrases, expressions and exclamations which you will hear all around you in Japan.

Tickets are available via Eventbrite. Please note:
Spaces are limited and will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.
This course requires a minimum of three students per class to run. In the event that this is not met and the course is cancelled, you will be entitled to a full refund.
