Glencoe is the most famous glen in Scotland. It’s known for its mountainous landscape which has inspired travellers as they passed through over the last 200 years. The glen is also associated with the infamous Massacre of 1692, when 38 MacDonalds were murdered by Scottish government troops who had been billeted with them. While the history of this event is well-known, the archaeological remains have only recently started to be investigated.
This talk will focus on the township of Achtriachtan in the middle of the glen. Achtriachtan is one of eight townships that were marked on General William Roy’s map of the mid-18th century and has been the focus of recent archaeological investigation by the National Trust for Scotland. The results are being used to inform a proposed replica turf and stone house to be constructed at the visitor centre.
During the renovations at Gladstone's Land, the Gladstone's Land Lecture Series will be taking place at the Georgian House.
