On this four weeks summer course in traditional Indonesian batik making (wax-resist dyeing technique), we will be focusing on the traditional method of batik tulis using canting, taught by Eliza; Indonesian born, Edinburgh based textile designer/ maker.

In addition to her extensive textile printing and designing experience, Eliza also trained in traditional Indonesian batik making at Jakarta Institute for the Arts during her time back in Indonesia. Being part Indonesian herself, she is keen on spreading the knowledge and joy of traditional Indonesian batik to anyone who’s willing to learn it.

Classes will run every Wednesday from 6-9pm for 4 weeks in the whole month of July.

What will you learn?

Introduction to traditional Indonesian batik patterns
Designing your own batik patterns
Batik-tulis making: drawing your patterns onto the fabric using canting and hot wax.
Dip dyeing and finishing process
What’s included?

Batik patterns template
Plain cotton fabric (4 x approx.50x50cm each)
Wax & canting
Dyes required for use for the duration of the course
What do you need to supply/ bring yourself?

Any motif ideas you’d like to experiment with
Sketchbook
Tracing paper
Due to the amount of information covered in this course, you will be expected to do some of the research work and drawings in your own time. Additional materials can also be purchased on the day.
