Blackwell's is delighted to be hosting Roy Pedersen and John Angus Mackay in conversation about Gaelic Guerilla on Wednesday 26th February!
About Gaelic Guerrilla with Roy Pedersen and John Angus Mackay
Known as ‘the Gaelic Guerrilla’, John Angus Mackay’s lifelong battle to save and strengthen the Gaelic tongue and culture has changed the face of Gaelic resources. His dogged and focused campaign - against huge establishment resistance - to win a Gaelic television channel has evolved into what is now BBC Alba, which at times attracts a viewership well in excess of the total number of Gaelic speakers in Scotland. That, however, is only part of John Angus’ story – his courage to overcome disabilities, his gifts as a teacher, his pivotal role in developing community co-ops in his native island and in bringing about the creation of the University of the Highlands and Islands – are but a few further examples of all he has achieved.
Roy Pedersen, author of Gaelic Guerrilla: John Angus Mackay, Gaelic Extraordinaire, presents a vivid, inspiring account of Mackay’s life and achievements. Appearing in conversation, Pedersen and Mackay traverse the astonishing story of a life spent safeguarding the longevity and prosperity of the Gaelic identity.
