About Xmashup

This December Upright Gallery is pleased to bring together 22 artists that have previously exhibited at the gallery and some that are lined up for 2020.

Since opening in spring 2017, the gallery has hosted variety of contemporary artists and photographers who’s work has ranged from film, photomontage, calligraphy, painting, photography, illustration to textiles, artist books and printing. All have brought a visual freshness and a variety of conceptual approaches to their work.

This year the gallery has seen artists Toni Harrower, Annalisa Merrilees and Debbie Mountain explore the formal qualities of paint and order. Soosan Danesh has delved into the structure and rhythm inspired by Edinburgh’s closes. Charlotte Roseberry painted her interpretations of what it is to be a mother and an artist. bound : unbound produced an exhibition of artist books and prints that took its queue from literary Edinburgh while Gen Harrison and Chris Sleath produced a range of letterpress posters based on writings about dialect by Ray French.

Throughout the year the gallery has hosted variety of artist talks and workshops. It has helped Michael Kay Terrance perform his ‘Height of Disappointment’ happening on the Links and even had a performance by musician Katherine Aly. Apart from an exciting range of exhibitions lined up next year, the gallery will take part in ‘Slow Art Day’ in association with artist Jenny Pope and students from Edinburgh Art College’s graphic design department.
