About Queer Dance Fitness Class

Donation based Queer Dance Fitness at CC Blooms 7pm.

For those who don't know me personally, my name is Natalie Lewit and I am a professional actress, dancer and fitness instructor with many years of experience in teaching very successful Latin dance fit classes in the UK.

I also work at the amazing charitable organisation LGBT Health and Wellbeing in Scotland, I'm a qualified holistic therapist, a nutritionist and mum of 2 amazing kids.

I want to provide a completely non-judgemental space where there's no pressure to perform as any gender, where you can just be yourself.

Body image is paramount within society, often with the emphasis on vanity over health. This body fascism, combined with the heightened gender divide within gyms, can lead to queer/trans identified people feeling excluded or uncomfortable in these spaces.

Gyms can be exclusionary spaces. If you’re lesbian, gay, bisexual or trans, it’s easy to feel marginalised and somehow exposed.

Sadly, within our LGBTQ+ community the levels of mental health problems are extremely high.

Research has found that attempted suicide rates and suicidal ideation among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth is significantly higher than among the general population.

The NHS encourages dancing as a physical activity to help improve fitness, and evidence shows that “regular dancing is great for losing weight, maintaining strong bones, improving posture and muscle strength, increasing balance and co-ordination and beating stress”

Extensive research has been invested into the benefits dancing has on mental health and research has identified that “dance and movement are known to have physical and psychological benefits for those with mental illness” (BBC). This is because dance uses the body to express them. Dance and fitness can really help; increasing confidence, mood boosting, great for weight loss and body toning, it boosts your heart health, helps de-stress, improves coordination, provides fun and makes you happy.

At the end of the day, I just want to be able to provide a fun and safe environment to my lovely community that I often see struggling.

Big thanks to CC Blooms for their amazing support.
Love, Nat X
