Heavily influenced by the Arts and Crafts style, Japanese detailing and Scottish baronial architecture, this work of 'total design' showcases Mackintosh's holistic approach.

Widely considered to be his greatest architectural work, for over 100 years the Mackintosh building functioned as a working art school. In May 2014 a fire damaged the west wing of the Mackintosh building and as such there is no visitor access to the interiors whilst restoration gets underway.

There is still plenty for visitors to do and see at The Glasgow School of Art, including GSA’s brand new Mackintosh Furniture Gallery, Window on Mackintosh visitor centre and shop in the recently completed, state of the art Reid building.

GSA’s award-winning student guides conduct daily Mackintosh at the GSA Tours. Explore Charles Rennie Mackintosh's story at The Glasgow School of Art, from student to master architect, as this popular tour enables visitors to uncover his ideas, inspirations, education and relationships. The tour looks at the fascinating exterior design of the Mackintosh building and provides exclusive access to the brand new Mackintosh Furniture Gallery.

Discover Glasgow's most daring new architectural work with a Reid Building Tour, every Saturday at 3pm. Or step outside with GSA's award-winning guides on a City Walking Tour - a unique way for residents and newcomers alike to discover Glasgow and delve further into the city's creative past and present.
