About Hidden Histories: Scotch on the Rocks - Literary Friction in the Scottish Enlightenment

The Scottish Enlightenment was a time when Scots punched well above their weight in the international arena of ideas. But it was also an era of acute anxiety among (and antagonism between) Scottish scholars as they struggled to conform to the strict norms of standard English without betraying their own unique literary character. This talk explores some of the heat as well as the light that was generated by this Enlightenment effort.

This lecture is part of the Hidden Histories series, which deals with some of the lesser known and more contentious subjects from Edinburgh’s past. This series is aimed at adults and older teenagers; please consider the subject matter carefully if booking tickets for children younger than this.
