About From Objects to Art-Objects with Hans K Clausen and Kjersti Sletteland

An introduction and exploration of contemporary sculpture practice which takes found and appropriated objects and materials as a point of departure for experimental making. Based on the personal interests, approaches and skills of two ESW Studio Holders the two course leaders will introduce ideas of the ‘ready made’, assemblage, and found objects and the creative potential of materials to produce sculpture. The course will investigate construction and deconstruction using found and ready-made objects, experimental mould making with plaster, papier-mâché, house-hold materials and food stuffs. You will also be invited to follow your own creative curiosity and bring in objects and materials to explore.

This course is ideal for those interested in learning more about contemporary art and wish to experiment with materials and processes.

Hans and Kjersti both highly value the place of partnership and collaborative working in their practice as visual artists. In 2018 they worked closely together on a socially engaged hospital art project, Anatomy of Fleeting Moments. This culminated in an exhibition for the Edinburgh Art Festival hosted by Edinburgh Universities Anatomical Museum.

Hans K Clausen graduated from Edinburgh College of Art with a BA (hons) in Sculpture in 2012. Since then he has developed his own object based sculptural language making and exhibiting work nationally from his studio at Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop. Alongside this he has built a reputation for participatory and socially engaged art practice through a series of community artist residencies and commissions. Clausen is currently a Teaching Fellow at University of Edinburgh’s Centre for Open Learning and the Community Artist at St Columba’s Hospice.
