About Three Great Debates: Christianity in the Public Square

The Royal College of Surgeons will play host on 25th October 2019 to three debates on the role of Christianity in Scottish public life of recent years, tackling the questions of Christianity’s relevance to modern society; the use of Christian principles in medicine; and, the Christian understanding of free speech.

The first of the debates will explore whether Christianity is relevant to modern society. Debating this issue will be Donald Findlay QC, twice Rector of St Andrews University, and Dr. Andy Bannister, Director of the Solas Centre for Public Christianity, and an Adjunct Lecturer at the Wycliffe College at University of Toronto.

To address the question of whether today however Christian principles should be dropped from medicine, the audience will hear from Professor David Galloway, the past President of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, and Lord Purvis of Tweed, former Scottish Lib Dem Shadow Finance Secretary.

Finally to debate whether Christians should support the criminalisation of hate speech the audience will hear from Dr Donald Macaskill, the Chief Executive of Scottish Care, and Paul Coleman, Executive Director of Alliance Defending Freedom International.

The three debates will be chaired by Mona Siddiqui OBE, Professor of Islamic and Interreligious Studies at the School of Divinity, University of Edinburgh.

The event will start with tea and coffee at 18.30, with the debate starting at 19.00, while there will be an opportunity to continue the conversation over drinks at 20.30.
