Velow Bikeworks: Classic, Vintage & Second Hand Bicycle Pop-Up Shop
10-30 September (closed Mondays)
Location: 17 St Stephen Street, Stockbridge Edinburgh EH3 5AN
Velow Bikeworks, a bike workshop with a difference, will bring its range of restored and custom-built steel-framed bicycles to the heart of Stockbridge this month. Established in Edinburgh in 2015 and now based just outside the city in Portobello, Velow Bikeworks restores and repurposes classic and vintage steel bicycles from the 1950s to 1990s that would otherwise be dumped in landfill. All of our classic bikes are sympathetically restored to original condition or custom built to our customers' individual specification. We have a wide range of ready-to-ride bicycles ranging from 3-speed town run-arounds to simple single speeds and retro 80s mountain bikes to fully restored lightweight racers from the golden era of cycling.
Founder and owner Walter Hamilton, an ex-graphic designer, explains: "I got bitten by the cycling bug in 2013 and wanted to learn some basic bike maintenance skills. So I rescued an old steel bicycle that was bound for the bin, took it apart, cleaned it up and put it all back together. I soon realised that there was something very satisfying about bringing a discarded bike back to life and the idea for Velow was born. There's something very pleasing about classic steel bicycles both aesthetically and functionally. It's true that they don't make them like they used to and the bikes I bring back to life are not only nice to look at but great fun to ride and have so much life left in them. It's incredibly satisfying knowing that I'm keeping old bikes on the road and helping to get more and more people riding bikes. I want to help people feel what I did when I found cycling; to experience the joy and freedom that cycling offers."
Based in Space at Seventeen, a private hire concept space at 17 St Stephen Street, the Velow pop-up will stock a wide range of ready-to-ride classic bicycles, hand-built British frames and refurbished vintage components alongside t-shirts, prints and cycling-related gift items from a hand-picked selection of local artists. It will also host an exhibition by local illustrator and cycling enthusiast Rebecca J Kaye.
We're very excited to be bringing our bikes to Stockbridge this September. Drop by to see the awesome range of vintage bikes and bits or come in to chat about a custom build or restoration project you might have in mind.
Our Portobello workshop is open year-round and based at Tribe Porty, 19 Windsor Place.
