About Toy Story 4: Half-Term Screening

FILM Toy Story 4 (2019) – (School Half-Term Screening)

Dir: Josh Cooley U, US, Animation, 100mins

The Toy Story franchise looked complete as a trilogy, when Andy became to big for his toys and passed them on to a new home. It seems odd then to return to the world of Woody and Buzz for a fourth instalment. Debutant director Cooley, takes ten minutes at the beginning of the film to plunge the viewer back in to the franchise lore, pulling out an interesting narrative nugget about the loss of Bo Peep, as well as connecting Andy’s toys to a new, younger child, Bonnie. There are new characters like Forky and Duke Caboom, as well as a satisfyingly complex nemesis Gabby Gabby, voiced by Mad Men’s Christine Hendricks. All in all a welcome return.
