Arguably Johann Sebastian Bach’s greatest single work, the towering ‘Mass in B minor’ offers thrilling choruses, beautiful arias and dazzling virtuoso instrumental solos, providing enjoyment, enlightenment, solace and challenges to audiences and performers alike.

Bach spent almost 25 years compiling his Mass, second only to the St Matthew Passion in its scope, variety and length. It didn’t take long after his arrival in Leipzig in 1723 for Bach to become frustrated with the politics and politicians of the city and he was soon looking for appointments elsewhere. The first half of the ‘Missa’ was submitted to the Elector of Saxony in Dresden in 1733 in the hope of earning himself a court title but no prized job was forthcoming. In 1748 the aged Bach, still in Leipzig, decided to complete his Mass, not for immediate use, but as an “encyclopaedic conspectus” of his art.

Bach never heard a complete performance in his lifetime, and to this day performances of the whole work, unprecedented in its monumentality, are occasions to cherish.

Edinburgh Royal Choral Union is joined by an exceptional quintet of young Bach specialists for this special concert, which brings our 160th season to a close. ERCU has a long association with the Mass in B Minor having given its Scottish premiere in 1907.
