ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Exploring the details, textures and histories found within architecture and the urban landscape. ‘Awakening Abstraction’ is an exhibition that examines how abstraction can evolve in different ways from an initial representational depiction, with a cross section of work where abstraction comes in the form of the chosen composition, the mark making process or from the initial idea itself. It celebrates purely abstract creations influenced by the likes of Mondrian, Rothko and Jasper Johns, whilst contrasting them with more representational paintings of urban scenes and compositions, passsing a friendly nod to the works a wide variety of artists from the impressionists and colourists, through to contemporary urban realists.

Jon says about ‘Awakening Abstraction’: “I’m really excited about the direction my painting has taken over the last year or so and it feels great to be putting together a solo exhibition to show the evolution of my work to this end. It will be a mix of new works and a representational cross section of my work over the last few years from the more architectural / urban themed paintings through to my bold and colourful abstract work.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Jon Canty is a British visual artist based in Edinburgh. His work explores many different themes but very often he investigates themes such as urban decay and the effects of the passage of time on the buildings and spaces we inhabit. Much of Jon’s work lies within a representational blueprint with varying degrees of abstraction in their compositions and approach. At the far end of his creative spectrum, he explores almost total abstraction with compositions of bold colours and geometric forms. Evident in much of Jon’s work is his background in Civil Engineering and town planning - an enquiring mind with a tension between logical exploration and creative expression.

Jon has previously exhibited in group and solo shows in Edinburgh and the Lothians, London and the south east of England. He has work in private collections in the UK, Germany, Australia and the USA.

ABOUT THE VENUE

Stickfactory is a small independent art gallery on Mayfield Road, on the South side of Edinburgh, with exhibition space extending over two floors. Stickfactory have been showing a few of Jon Canty's works within their Ground Floor Gallery mixed exhibition since January, and it has been so well received by the public that they decided to give Jon a solo exhibition in their Lower Floor Gallery.
