De la robotique sous-marine à la robotique autonome

Nous connaissons mieux la surface de la lune et de Mars que les fonds sous-marins qui couvrent 70% de notre planète et sont le lieu de vie de milliers d’espèces, souvent encore inconnues. Chaque mission sous-marine découvre de nouvelles espèces ou formes de vies et l’océan recèle une réserve de molécules nouvelles uniques et critiques pour le développement de nouveaux médicaments. La raison ? C’est un milieu extrêmement difficile d’accès pour les humains. Les robots sous-marins nous permettent d’accéder librement à cet environnement unique. Dans ce café scientifique je discuterai les enjeux et difficultés associées au développement de tels robots et l’émergence de la robotique autonome comme solution à l’exploration systématique des océans.

Je suis français, diplômé de l’École Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications de Bretagne en 1991. Après un doctorat en traitement optique des images, je pars à Édimbourg pour un post-doctorat en robotique sous-marine. Découverte et engouement immédiat. En 2001 je crée SeeByte Ltd, une start-up pour commercialiser nos travaux en robotique autonome. Nous la vendons en 2013 quand elle atteint une taille trop importante pour gérer ma carrière académique en parallèle. Je travaille depuis 20 ans sur tous les aspects de la robotique sous-marine, de la commande bas-niveau à l’intelligence embarquée.
