Get the kids outdoors and away from the screens this summer with a visit to Fort Douglas. During the summer holidays you’ll find lots of extra activities in this magical adventure playground, included in your entry fee. The sessions are designed for kids with some parental/guardian help, so be prepared to get (a little) messy. Most of all, HAVE FUN! And remember, we always have coffee up there for the adults for summer holiday survival.
The sessions will differ every day with something for all ages. Some of the sessions on offer include:
Play at being Bear Grylls for the day and learn to build a small den in under 30 minutes using the woodland around you. The Fort Douglas team will help show you some important techniques to help it stand.
Like building stuff? Let your imagination run wild with dried pasta and marshmallows! You can recreate the iconic Queensferry Crossing or Forth Rail Bridge – or even the Fort Douglas high rise walkways. The taller the structure the better!
Outdoor crafting fun. Using air drying clay you can create your own Groot face stuck on to a tree. Use the surrounding resources / twigs / acorns and grass to make your face as scary or pretty as you like – the choice is yours.
Paper Boat Sailing
Create your own sailing boat design and see if it floats. Ahoy captain!
Pebble Painting & Messy Pebbles
Choose a pebble that takes your fancy and decorate using paint or felt tip pens. Making sure to tag the rock as yours and you can either hide it in the park for others to find or take it further afield for others to enjoy. Or very simply take it home to enjoy your Picasso inspired art.
Mini Bug Hotels
Using bamboo canes you can create the ideal home for bugs and creepy crawlies to bed down for the night. You can also learn why it’s important to look after the bugs that we take for granted every day.
Mini Bug Hunting
Search through the decaying bark and under the rocks to find the dark places where the bugs and creepy crawlies naturally live – and learn what they eat from day to day.
Using card and some basic essentials, learn how to make a kite that you can fly even on the stillest of days. Work out the best angles for flight and understand how a kite flies.
Using everyday materials you will be able to make an effective bird feeder in under 30 minutes.
Ever wondered how the grown ups do it? Now’s your chance! Make swords, flowers and more.
Each activity is included in your Fort Douglas entry fee.
